Taper Time.

Please say the title of this post the same way you would say ‘Hammer Time’ … because that’s how I’m saying it in my head. 🙂

I’m behind on my blogging. This marathon training thing is no joke. So excuse the unorganized manner of my next few posts; obviously I have some catching up to do.

I amazed myself this weekend.
I ran 20 miles.
Straight.
Seven miles on my own.
In the early morning dark.
Then ran a half marathon.
20 miles.
BOOM.

I don’t recall if I mentioned this in my previous post…but I got very lonely at the end of my 18 mile run. I wanted to make sure this didn’t happen for my 20 miles…and it worked out perfect that the Blue Moon Half Marathon in Palm Harbor fell on my 20 miler weekend!

I started out the morning at 5:30AM with seven miles on my own. Then re-energized myself, changed shirts, and quickly registered for the half.

Start time: 7:30AM. The course of this race was two loops that included climbing an overpass twice…not fun. But the race was put together well and I would suggest it (they have made quite a few positive changes to this race series).

Not my best time for a half…but can’t complain considering it was done with a 7 mile warm up!

I felt pretty good afterwards, considering I had just run for 3 hours and 50 minutes…which, I’d like to add, that my 20 mile run only took me 10 minutes more than my 18 miles run…hmmm…

I promptly returned home for an ice bath. I did an ice bath after my 18 — and they really do work for me. I don’t know all the logistics, but the bath really does speed up recovery. Soaked my lower half accompanied with a 20 lb. of ice for 13 minutes, warm shower, then on with the day!

Wore my compressions sleeves all day, duh, and took it easy. Made sure to still keep my legs moving — even did a round of mini golf with my brother at dusk.

The next day some soreness kicked in. I wasn’t able to to wear closed toe shoes due to some swelling and a blister 🙁 and was walking a little funny … but not nearly as bad as I was anticipating.

On Tuesday I decided to take a personal day to relax and get some things marked off my to-do list. Woke up feeling like 20 miles was weeks ago…I did Insanity’s Cardio Recovery and my hips loved and hated the stretching. Nice!

All hail the (sometimes painful) ice bath!!

I’m pleased to announce that I found my GU replacement. Last running season I ran 10 half marathons in a mere six months — all while utilizing GU for races and longer training runs. I quickly learned that I didn’t like what GU did to my stomach, but didn’t change things up because it was still doing what I needed it to do…give me energy.

But — TA-DA! I found Sport Beans by Jelly Belly. There are only two flavors (that I’ve tried thus far) with caffeine, but both are yummy. I use these with my hand-held water bottle filled with Nuun or coconut water and I’m good to go!

 

16 days until my marathon!! Eek!!
Now go sweat some 😉
