Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) has only been something I viewed as a challenge. I first tried it years ago…on the gulf; it was definitely tricky with the tide, but it was fun. And I have not tried it since…
…this past weekend!
disclaimer: thanks to my relationship with Urban Kai, I was able to try SUP in exchange for a blog review & social media love. all of my opinions are my own.
Lauren and I were excited to venture on the Hillsborough with views of downtown Tampa, UT & Bayshore, and thanks to Mike, we had a blast. The water was perfect and with direction from Mike — both Lauren and I stood for majority of our paddle! Both of us loved it & are already planning our next session — I will be sharing some tips below for your first SUP experience.
Urban Kai has their grand opening at the Riverwalk location this weekend! On Saturday, April 22nd, starting at 8:30AM, join them for a full day of events. Since Saturday is also Earth Day, for the first few hours, they are hosting a big clean up — on land and on water. And after lunch, you can join them for an Intro to SUP, a water fitness class & Yoga SUP. For full details, visit here.
Urban Kai has two locations for you to enjoy, at the Riverwalk, downtown near the Marriott Tampa Waterside, or off of Gandy. Making reservations is ideal for both locations, and you are able to rent from both — great hourly rates, and the more people the merrier.
Now for some quick tips:
water: while you are on the water, don’t forget that you’ll be moving & grooving and may get thirsty. Personally, I felt that SUP was a full body workout and wished I had some water with me during my hour paddle. *from the pros: if you have a Camelbak, that is ideal, since you can grab a drink without needing both hands. sunscreen: my Irish skin turned pink, but my Italian skin was brown the next day — yay! But don’t forget it… and since you’re on the water, you’re getting the rays from that too. what to wear: I did not want to do a swimsuit, but many do; my lulu capris, tank top, hat & glasses were perfect. Yes, I did get wet, but I was comfortable and it did keep some of me covered from the sun. listen: Mike knows what he’s talking about! Not saying that I didn’t listen…but following his advice made my SUP that much better. waterproof pouch: Yeah, my ziplock bag didn’t do much… thankfully they had a spare waterproof pouch for my phone! But if this is something you may do frequently, a pouch would be worth the purchase. water safety: don’t mess around with this one; by law you do have to have certain safety devices on your or on your board. While Urban Kai makes sure you are all set — keep that in mind if you should rent elsewhere or go out on your own. have fun! Kelly Margetts, an International SUP Racer (quite a Pro — and speedy fast!) said so himself! “You’re not doing it right if you’re not having fun.”
And thanks again!! Can’t wait to get back on the water again!
