Straz Center: Lessons from Chicago, #hosted #broadwayintampa

I was a junior in high school when “Chicago” hit the theaters – it quickly became one of my favorite movies. While show tunes have never been my thing, I have always had a love for rhythm, snazzy outfits and dance acts that make you envious of their moves. Let’s just say the other evening I was humming along to every song, and don’t worry, you can too. The Straz Center is hosting “Chicago” now until Sunday, September 23rd. You do NOT want to miss it!

We all know the story – the drama, the risky business, the high kicks, all the razzle dazzle. But you should really see it for yourself. I loved how the orchestra was even on stage; the talent is unreal and there is raw emotion oozing from the stage – which is amazing considering “Chicago” is the longest-running American musical in broadway history.

But you don’t need to hear it all from me – instead, here are seven lessons from the tunes of “Chicago.” And don’t worry, steal ’em – I won’t throw in behind bars and make you hire Billy Flynn to represent your case. 😉

“All That Jazz” – For me, music is essential. Sometimes a little too important… but we all have our favorites. It can begin the mood, end the mood – get rid of anxiety, or tip you off. Plus, dancing is fun.

“Cell Block Tango” (Pop | Six | Squish | Uh uh | Cicero | Lipschitz!) – Let’s be real, do we need a lesson from this one? This is just a fun song with crazy stories.

“When You’re Good to Mama” – A gentle reminder to be good to your momma. Visit her, send her funny texts, give her phone call, hug her tight. And that goes for any mom-figure, I’m sure they love all those things too.

“A Little Bit of Good” – Of course this stuck all the chords of my optimistic heart. As one who finds the silver lining is every situation (even the ones that don’t deserve one), our world needs more positivity. Find a little ray of sunshine, then share it – thus brightening that ‘little bit of good.’

“I Can’t Do It Alone” – Easier said than done – we all can agree on that one. It takes practice, and time, to be able to admit when you have to put your ego aside and ask for help. Luckily, over time, your ego decreases in size – making it easier to ask for help when you truly need it.

“Mr. Cellophane” – #keepingitreal, this song brought tears to my eyes; I honestly did not remember this song from years ago. Don’t be transparent. You matter. Your opinion counts. Someone loves you. I recall in high school, and even times in my 20s where I wanted to be my own version of cellophane and in a sense, disappear. So, I added some ink to my skin so I’ll never fully be camo 😉 – and so glad I did.

“Razzle Dazzle” – We all deserve that razzle dazzle, dammit, we all do. Yes, it’s more appropriate in certain situations – but don’t forget you’re special too.
