Why Sleep Should Never Be Sacrificed.

If I had a dollar every time someone told me I need more sleep than what I get… well, it would maybe fuel my love for Starbucks. While some of us do function better on less sleep, it is definitely something that should not be skimped on and is pretty important. If you are like me, holding a full time gig and still working my passions, or like Bethany and working towards earning your masters of counseling degree, the idea of “free time” is something that just doesn’t fit into your lifestyle. In order to fit everything into our busy schedule, we always make little sacrifices, and I’d be lying if I said that I never cut back on sleep in order to get everything done.

While those deadlines are real, or that movie is too good to turn off, sleep is something that should never be sacrificed. Here’s a look at why:

it goes so much deeper. We all know that by getting enough sleep we will feel rested in the morning; and it feels ahhhhmazing. However, sometimes it just feels like there are not enough hours in the day to get everything done, so we go to bed later than normal and wake up earlier than we’d like. People like to think they can just catch up on sleep later; or worse yet, that “extra” sleep was never needed in the first place.

However, not getting enough sleep starts to take a toll on someone pretty quickly, both mentally and physically. (as I raise my hand because lately I’ve noticed I’m more dehydrated & my skin isn’t as glowy as normal). If you sacrifice sleep on a regular basis you will be dealing with much more than just “feeling tired”. #preach

fight germs by staying rested. No one enjoys being sick with a cold or flu virus, but it can also cut into fun time or taking extra time off work or school. One of the best ways you can protect yourself from catching bugs is to make sure your body is well-rested; this allows your immune system to function at its highest level.

enjoy a memory boost by getting your sleep. If you’re the type that seems to constantly be forgetting things, it could be that you’re just not getting enough sleep. Let’s face it, as a busy-bee there is a whole lot of work and memorization involved, so memory and focus is something you depend on. When you are trying to learn something new, or write something fresh, you will find you are much more effective if you are well-rested. Sleep actually helps to prepare your brain for the day ahead; it allows your brain to function and work better.

make decisions faster & easier. It is not just a theory that those sleep deprived can typically take longer to make a decision. It has been shown that when you aren’t getting enough sleep there are areas in your brain that are altered and this can affect your decision making abilities. Not only does this have a negative impact on your work, but your extras (your passions, schooling, even time with friends!); it affects pretty much everything in your day that requires thinking, focusing, and problem-solving skills.

make it a priority. While it is not always possible to get that ideal eight hours of sleep each and every night, sleep shouldn’t be looked at as something you can push aside and sacrifice. Not getting enough sleep creates a domino effect rather quickly, making it impossible for you to function at your top level.

So with a raise of hands, who got 7-8 hours last night?!

I am a hot mess if I don’t get enough sleep. I require more sleep than most, I think.

Not getting enough sleep is one of your biggest migraine triggers so I make sure not to skimp.
